SeaWorld's Side

SOURCE: http://www.sarahakwisombe.com/

  •  Killer whales are not your average giraffe or lion zoo animal, they are creatures that swim hundreds of thousands of miles a day. Where they do not have the ability to swim such vast distances in captivity, when they live in SeaWorld. SeaWorld cares is the website ran directly by the SeaWorld company themselves. Although Sea World claims that their animals are treated properly and receive excellent healthcare, one must be skeptical of their claims because they have a profit motive to make themselves look good.

  • This article on Sea World's website tells the story of how Tilikum the orca whale was captured and a some information regarding his life and death. The article also describes the health issues Tilikum suffered from and died with. All the information that is posted on this page is biased and is meant to make SeaWorld sound amazing and very high quality. The authors make many biased comments about how their animals, specifically Tilikum, “received the best in marine mammal health care and life enrichment available for killer whales” (Seaward Cares). All of the information on this page really seems to be exaggerated, and they also provide no statistics or evidence to support their claims.

  • Killer whales are majestic, massive creatures.Their website posts new articles about animals, this source specifically is an article on the death of their most famous whale, Tilikum. With that said, should the government restrict a company's ability to profit from animals held in captivity due to all the physical and mental (even young deaths) effects being in captivity has on these animals. This source tells facts regarding Tilikum's heath: he has suffered with “bacterial infection in his lungs, [which] the suspected bacteria is very resistant to treatment and a cure for his illness has not been found” (SeaWorld Cares). Mentioned his age which was claimed, that “he is about 35 years old, which is near the high end of the average life” (Seaworld Cares).  “Tilikum was not born at or collected by SeaWorld. He came to us from Sealand of the Pacific in Canada. SeaWorld has not collected a whale from the wild in nearly 40 years, and this past March we announced the end of the orca breeding program effectively making the whales currently at SeaWorld the last generation of orcas under human care” (Seaworld Cares).
  •  Overall this source really helps expand and explain my specific topic, because I am talking a lot about the treatment of Orca Whales specifically, because they have broad details about how killer whales are treated at SeaWorld. Many people are very uneducated in the topic of the harm these animals receive in the amusement parks, but even more people are blinded to the fact that there are hundreds of more parks and animals outside of the United States, and they are experiencing the same horrible issues.

  • Future Research Question: How do people outside of Sea World view their treatment of marine life?
