Institutions should encourage people to partake in deep work so that they can be more productive. We live in a society that demands a lot from us in the workplace. One of the most effective ways to be productive in this society is to engage in deep work. Deep work is the ability to focus without distraction on a cognitively demanding task. Some of the most well known and successful people engage in deep work. For example J.K Rowling author of the Harry Potter series. When Rowling was struggling to write the ending of the Deathly Hallows she isolated herself completely from her surroundings. In fact, she rented a hotel room so that she could do this. Many people leave their phone on and tell themselves that if an alert pops up they will only spend a few seconds looking at their phone. According to Cal Newport associate professor of computer science at Georgetown University, the act of looking at the phone itself is what puts people off task, not the duration that people look at their phones. That is why Cal suggests you should turn all alerts off and create an emergency number that people can contact you at in moments of distress. Cal also points out the idea that if you engage in deep work you will be happier and enjoy the work you do more.
In conclusion, focus is essential to our lives it allows us to make the most of our abilities and institutions should encourage deep work so that society can be more efficient in the workplace.
