Every sector of our business economy is going to be affect by the rapid change in robotics. In an article by Dan Shewan, 5 million jobs across of 15 developed nations will cease to exist by the year 2020. This rapid change is brought by robotics and engineering.
If you were to walk into a brand new McDonald's in downtown New York, you would not be greeted by someone to take your order, but rather McDonald’s brand new “Create Your Taste” kiosk. You would then continue to get your customized burger without making contact with a human being. Changes like this are happening to all sectors of our economic workforce. Engineers have created a new machine that has the ability to milk cows. A farmer in Wisconsin has already implemented this technology. He is saving his time and money with the cow milking machine. Robotics and automations is taking away jobs in our work force.
Many people argue that these jobs being destroyed by robotics and automation are just replaced with engineering and computer science positions. However, they are not replaced nearly at the same rate. For every job created for automation, several more will be destroyed. Our economy can not handle this negative change in positions. As well, the training and education required for jobs in engineering and computer science is drastic.
Institutions such as Carnegie Mellon have millions of dollars in robotics labs to train people in robotics. However, in order to adjust to this rapid economic change, people, not just those who go to carnegie mellon, but all need to be able to learn engineering and coding. Unfortunately, as of now we don’t have the resources to be able to offer the same type of training programs to those who study at community colleges. A lot of change needs to happen if we want to keep people employed in the workforce.
Future Research Question: What job sectors are most affected by the rapid change in technology/robotics?
