Lost at Sea, Conclusion

SYNTHESIZING RESEARCH ON IF THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD RESTRICT A COMPANY'S ABILITY TO TO PROFIT FROM ANIMALS HELD IN CAPTIVITY?

  • Animals that live in captivity undergo many unnatural situations, which cause many physical, emotional and mental harm to the animals in captivity, specifically in places such as SeaWorld. It should not be legal for companies such as SeaWorld to keep animals in captivity as they cause many untreatable harm to the animals, just for the companies to receive profit. I believe that the government should take action and get involved, creating new laws to regulate the treatment of animals in captivity. In my opinion, the profit and information the large companies receive from keeping animals in captivity does not outweigh the unchangeable harm that is caused to the animals while suffering in captivity.
  • After doing research, I believe that it is best if the government does step in and set down laws and regulations in order to manage companies, such as SeaWorld. When companies are not watched over by higher officials, they are free to do whatever they want in order to help themselves. Just like the invisible hand articles, people are always in their best interest and in this case it is regarding maximizing their profits. SeaWorld will do almost whatever it takes for them to gain the largest profit, and evidently showing that they will not give their animals, or even staff, the best and safest treatment. The research companies can gain from observing animals in captivity can be potentially beneficial, but is not necessarily accurate when the animals are living in such unnatural environments. With that said, companies, specifically  SeaWorld, have an average net worth of 2.5-3 billion dollars per year. But this money could be used to help the animals greatly. The animals in SeaWorld, specifically suffer from many physical and mental conditions, many which are not present in wild Orca whales. Years ago, many people were unaware of the cruel treatment of these animals and the public just believed everything that the company told them. The only people who knew the truth were the workers and people affiliated with the company. The company was profiting and doing great until the film BlackFish was released. This film interviewed and provided many different opinions and data from scientists to researches and even SeaWorld employees, which ultimately exposed SeaWorld and their unjust treatment of animals, Orca whales specifically. This release of information opened the eyes from the public and caused SeaWorld to suffer greatly. SeaWorld was getting attacked from every possible angle and everything was looking bad for them, with that said they obviously tried to refute and say their side and argue that the information was all false. To this day, years later, SeaWorld still has not recovered fully from the results of the leaked information despite their attempts. In addition to their overall revenue decrease, the government has got involved and set more regulations on the workers’ and animal’s safety, ultimately reducing the abilities shows held at SeaWorld.
  • In conclusion, there are certain situations where companies should be left alone to manage and operate their business. But when their practices cause numerous deaths and continuous harm to both animals and humans, there needs to be a higher force stepping in. Without the government's intervention, companies such as SeaWorld will just continue to focus only on their profits and more humans and animal’s lives will suffer.
